Hello and welcome,
The following portfolio presents a historical record of a selection of projects of my practice which I established in 1970 having left the invigorating community and deeply rooted professionalism of the John B. Parkin Associates, then a veritable post-graduate school of modernist architectural principles.
As you peruse the portfolio you will see a variety of building types, each being a synthesis of the site configuration, its prospect, history and topography, together with the clients’ functional requirements.
If I were to suggest to you a characteristic shaping my work, it would be the distillation of a design idea to its simplest form both functionally and aesthetically. In the residential commissions particularly, I have always been interested in the value of natural light, and how it can be teased into the interior spaces; this has been a consistent theme.
As I periodically revisit these images myself, I recall the close and personal associations I enjoyed with the many talented young architects who brought their own passions to my studio, and when our clients participated at close quarters, as I urged them to do, a better “piece” was always the result......these were rich and deeply rewarding collaborations. Many of the buildings have been published and some have been recognized with design awards from agencies in the world of architecture.
As a footnote, I am gratified and proud that all the drawings and files of my practice now reside in the Architectural Section of the Archives of the Government of Ontario, a repository so well managed by York University.
